Camera help? Should I get it now or wait?

So I have decided to get a nikon 5100 to use and practice on so that when I go into AP photography in a year I will know how to use my camera. My mom however believes that I should get a cheaper camera becuz The 5100 will be outdated by next year. I think that I will be able to use this nikon for a really long time. What do u think should I get it now or wait till next year to get the newest camera out?
